Shopmobility Takes on the Tall Ships

Friday 29th August 2010

What a weekend!

Middlesbrough Shopmobility were invited to provide a service at the North-East event of the year.

Armed with 20 wheelchairs, Gail and Mikey and 5 volunteers arrived to what can only be described as a festival site, except the mud was dust and rocks.

Through the chaos the charity provided a new element- "A wheelchair shuttle run", this involved 7 exhausted staff pushing any person needing help a quarter of a mile to the parking site in a wheelchair. Much to our relief, the real shuttle bus arrived on Sunday!

With over 150 hires from people all over the world, the charity had a huge success. Middlesbrough Shopmobility would like to thank all volunteers who helped.

Launch of Disability Plan September 2010

Friday 29th August 2010

By talking to people with disabilities we have written a strategic plan that shows the issues that are important. We would like to share this with you and talk to you about what we need to do next.

You will be able to find out how you can be involved in a new Forum that will give disabled people a colletive voice. This will make sure we develop services that people really need to enable them to live independantly in the community.

We will also be asking you to comment on a draft Sensory Support Plan that is being developed alongside people who have sensory impairments. These are exciting new developments that will only succeed if we work together.

The launch event will take place on 8th September 2010 at Middlesbrough TAD Centre 10am-1pm. Lunch is provided. If you are interested in attending please contact Gemma Gillespie on 01642 729253 or email gemma_gillespie@middlesbrough.gov.uk . Once you have registered your interest we will send out more information nearer the date.
